Dialogue interreligieuxJohn Newton a écrit un poème qui fut transcrit en musique dans les paroles de la fameuse chanson Amazing Grace, pour se repentir des esclaves qu'il avait marchandé. Il était un marchand d'esclaves mais il ne considérait pas les eslaves comme des objets mais comme des hommes. Au cours d'une traversée très agitée à cause d'une énorme tempête, de laquelle il faillit ne jamais revenir, il demanda de l'aide à Dieu,se convertit et demanda pardon au seigneur et inspiré par ce qu'il venait de vivre, il écrit la chanson qui a inspiré tant de personne, Amazing Grace. Puis il consacra sa vie à la lutte contre l'esclavage, même lorsque il devient aveugle. Il mourut en 1807, et il ne put voir le rève de toute une vie, soit l abolition de l esclavage aux Etats-Unis d'Amérique en 1865.
